The A-B-C-D-E Bike Check

A is for AIR

Are the tyres pumped to correct pressure—stamped onto side wall of tyre

Adult Bikes: Hybrid Bikes 40-70PSI,
Knobbly Mountain Bike tyres: 50-80 PSI
Road Bike tyres: 90-110PSI
Kids bikes: Little kids 30-40PSI, Pre teens: 40-60PSI

Also check the tyres for signs of wear in the tread or crack on the side walls

B is for BRAKES

Do both brakes stop the bike when applied and don’t touch the handlebar
Are the brakes allowing the bike wheel to roll freely (not rubbing)

C is for CHAIN

Spin the pedals backwards. The chain should run freely, without making scraping noises, rust, or drooping.

Is the chain Free of dirt/muck and not dry/rusted

D is for DIRECTION

Stand in front of the bike.

Grip the front wheel with your feet tightly so the bike stands up without you holding it.

Wiggle your handlebars. They should be secure and firmly aligned with your front wheel.  If handlebars turn without the wheel moving, they need tightening.

The handlebars are often loose on kids bikes as when then they drop the bike, the handlebar bolt can loosen. This needs tightening

Investigate and speak to your local bike shop or bike mechanic if you can’t fix it

E is for Everything Else

  •  Are the holes at the end of the handlebar covered? These can be quite dangerous if they are exposed and you have a crash.  Get new Bar Ends if they are missing
  • Shoe Laces – Make sure the lace ends / loops are not too long. You dont want them catching on the chain
  • Check your Helmet – Does it fit correctly?
  • Will your trousers get caught on the chain or chain ring
