Teaching your child to learn to ride a bike in 60 minutes
Helping your child to learn to ride a bike is a rite of passage .
A lot has changed since most of us learned to ride a bike as training wheels or stabilisers and balance bikes are now generally preferred
Many of our customers ask how long with it take for a child to learn to ride a bicycle?
We have found the time varies with each customer but generally it is around 30 minutes but the time varies and they they have 30 minutes to practice pedalling and other cycle skills.
Our experience proves it is important to wait the point when the child has developed coordination rather than forcing it because then it can become stressful.
Generally ages 4 to 8 are good ages to learn to pedal for the first time as waiting any later can make it harder to learn.
Children learn by copying others so we do some riding in front of them so they can understand what they are about to do.
We start by helping your child’s coordination develope on a bike so they begin learning about the feeling and balance of a bike.
It’s key to keep the saddle at a height that allows your child to just about touch the floor. If it’s too low, they will rely too heavily on their feet as stabilisers.
We then move onto pedals. We help them start riding for the first time by gently holding them and the bike up and ask them to pedal. As their pedalling gets better, we start to let go and very often they can do 3 or 4 pedal strokes without any support from us.
Over time, these 3 or 4 pedal strokes become 8 or 10 and very quickly become 20, 30 40 or more.
This means your child is riding for the first time.
Our teach a child to ride a bike course usually takes place on the Keble School artificial grass pitch in Winchmore Hill.
We provide bikes for children and adults to learn on and our cycle training course is very popular and succesful.
